Xiamen Medical College (XMMC) is one of the three medical undergraduate universities in Fujian Province. With its origin dating back to the Gulangyu Medical School founded in 1898, the institution has gone through successive developmental stages as Xiamen Health School and Xiamen Medical Higher Vocational College. In March 2016, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be upgraded to a full-time public undergraduate institution, adopting a provincial-level administration system featuring joint development by the province and the city. In 2023, the College successfully passed the Undergraduate Teaching Qualification Evaluation by the Ministry of Education, and in 2025, it was included in the training program for Fujian Provincial Master’s Degree Granting Institutions. Guided by the motto Deep Virtue Builds Character; Profound Skill Builds Career”, XMMC fosters a culture of Positivity, Openness, Kindness and Gratitude”, alongside with the academic atmosphere of “Loyalty, Solidarity, Pragmatism and Creativity.” Combining the socialist core values with the actual situation of medical colleges and universities, XMMC refines the medical and health talents cultivating concept of “Four Talents”, namely, “Be Loyal to the country, filial to their parents, responsible to their units, and dedicated to the patients” with its own characteristics. Rooted in Xiamen, serving Fujian, and radiating across the nation, XMMC is committed to supplying high-quality applied medical and health talents for the healthcare industry as well as the pharmaceutical and health industries. Since its upgrade and rename, XMMC has broken new ground in undergraduate education, surmounting formidable challenges to achieve transformative, quality-focused, distinctive, green, and safe development.

The College boasts exceptional campus conditions. Located in Jimei District, Xiamen,the hometown of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader praised by Chairman Mao Zedong as the “Flag of Overseas Chinese and Glory of the Nation”,the campus features a picturesque environment nestled between mountains and the sea. Amidst the lush greenery and the grandeur of Tan Kah Kee-style architecture, the College provides advanced teaching and research equipment and well-organized public services and management. The campus covers a total area of 885 mu(59 hectares), with a total construction area of 283,000 square meters. The total value of its teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is about 450 million yuan, and the library houses 810,000 printed books and provides access to 700,000 e-books.Furthermore,it has two National Physician Qualification Examination (Clinical and Dental Categories) Practical Skills Test Centers. The College also has 2 directly affiliated hospitals, 4 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 52 teaching hospitals and 170 off-campus training bases.

The academic framework is continuously refined and expanded. The College currently has 12 teaching institutions, namely, Department of Clinical Medicine, Department of Stomatology, Department of Nursing Science, Department of Pharmacy, Department of Public Health and Medical Technology, Basic Medicine Department, School of Marxism, General Education Department, Department of Continuing Education, and Physical Education Teaching Department, as well as the Second Affiliated Hospital and Affiliated Stomatological Hospital with three aided teaching institutions of the Library, Information Center, and Laboratory and Equipment Management Center. XMMC now has 19 undergraduate majors including Clinical Medicine, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Therapy, Anesthesiology, Stomatology, Dental Technology, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Chinese Materia Medica, Biopharmaceuticals, Marine Pharmacy, Preventive Medicine, Cosmetic Science and Technology, Information Management and Information System, Medical Laboratory Technology, Optometry, Cosmetic Technology and Engineering, and Physical Rehabilitation Therapy. These majors cover four major disciplinary categories: Medicine, Science, Engineering and Management. The College recruits students nationwide, with a total enrollment of approximately 8,400 students. Renowned domestic universities including Peking University School of Stomatology and West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University provide counterpart support to our college. Since 2021, XMMC has jointly recruited and cultivated postgraduate students with Fujian Medical University, Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Jimei University.

The faculty and talent team has been continuously optimized.We are honored to have invited Academician Zhong Nanshan as the Honorary Director of the Institute of Respiratory Diseases and Honorary President of the Second Affiliated Hospital. Currently, the College employs 3,040 faculty, staff, and medical personnel (including those from the two directly affiliated hospitals). Among them, 515 are full-time teachers. Of these, 181 hold doctoral degrees, accounting for 35% of the full-time faculty; 86 hold senior professional titles and 187 hold associate senior professional titles, together comprising 53% of the full-time faculty. The College has attracted 147 high-level talents (person-times), including recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, Qihuang Scholars (National Leading Talent Program in Traditional Chinese Medicine), Fujian Provincial High-level Entrepreneurship and Innovation Talents, candidates selected for the Hundred-Thousand-Talents Project (Provincial level), awardees of Fujian Provincial Hundred-Talent Program for High-Level Talents from Taiwan,winners of the Fujian May 1st Labor Medal, and Provincial Distinguished Teaching Masters. Additionally, the College hosts 3 Provincial-level Undergraduate Teaching Teams.

The education and teaching reform has been steadily advanced. The majors of Clinical Medicine, Stomatology and Nursing have successfully passed the professional accreditation organized by the Ministry of Education. At the national level, XMMC has been approved with 2 majors and 3 training bases supported by central finance;1 national demonstration site for health services and 1 for elderly care services respectively; 1 teaching achievement award granted by the National Vocational Education Teaching Advisory Board, and 4 national first-class courses. At the provincial level, the College has won 7 provincial teaching achievement awards, established 4 provincial first-class major construction sites and 12 provincially funded majors. It also owns 1 curriculum ideological and political education research center, 9 experimental teaching centers, 1 modern industrial college, and 1 virtual teaching research office. In addition, there are 42 provincial first-class courses, 2 provincial model courses for curriculum ideological and political education, and 87 education and teaching reform projects. Meanwhile, 7 majors have been recognized as municipal key majors. In national teaching competitions for young teachers and teaching innovation competitions among undergraduate universities, faculty members have won 3 second prizes and 1 third prize. In the Fujian Provincial Young Teachers' Teaching Competition and Teaching Innovation Competition , they have obtained 2 special prizes, 3 first prizes, 12 second prizes, 8 third prizes and 3 special excellence awards. The College has been awarded the Excellent Organization Award for five times.

The scientific research and innovation capabilities has been improved in an all-round way. It currently hosts 9 provincial and municipal research platforms and 1 municipal public technical service platform. Since 2016, the College has undertaken a total of 1,468 research projects at all levels including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, together with 294 horizontal projects. It has won a series of research awards, including 1 First Prize, 2 Second Prizes and 2 Third Prizes of the Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, as well as the Natural Resources Science and Technology Award, Ocean Engineering Science and Technology Award, Outstanding Academic Paper Award in Natural Sciences, and Xiamen Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. The College has been granted 425 intellectual property rights including national invention patents, and has published 3,603 academic papers in the fields of natural sciences and social sciences.

The quality of talent training has been steadily improved. Graduates maintain high levels in three key indicators:the pass rate for the National Physician Licensing Examination, graduate employment rate, and postgraduate admission rate. Since 2016, graduates majoring in Stomatology and Clinical Medicine have sustained a high pass rate in the National Physician Licensing Examination. The pass rate of graduates in National Nurse Licensing Examination has remained at 100%.The graduate employment rate has ranked among the top peer institutions for many consecutive years. The postgraduate admission performance is outstanding, with students admitted to double first-class universities including Peking University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, and Peking Union Medical College. XMMC has nurtured a number of outstanding role models, such as Chinese College Students Self-improvement Star, Fujian Advanced Individual for Courage in Righteous Deeds, as well as students who have donated hematopoietic stem cells and performed life-saving first aid on public buses.

Exchanges and cooperation have been gradually expanded. We have established collaborative exchanges with prestigious institutions worldwide, including Harvard University, the University of Michigan, Boston University, and Duke University in the United States, the University of Alberta in Canada, and the University of the West of England and Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the College has forged friendly cooperative relations with universities in the Taiwan region, including Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences, National Taiwan Ocean University, and Fooyin University. Approved and filed by the Ministry of Education, XMMC is qualified to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and holds specific authorization for independent recruitment from Taiwan.

Under the leadership of Fujian Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, Xiamen Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, and the leadership of the college Party Committee, XMMC adheres to the guidance of Party building. In accordance with the development goal of “greater scale, stronger strength, steadier progress and stricter governance”, the College strives to apply for recognition as a Master’s Degree Granting Institution by 2029, and endeavors to build itself into a high-level, application-oriented medical undergraduate university that possesses a firm educational orientation, robust local service capabilities, distinctive characteristics, and regional first-class standing.
